Suite à l’invitation du directeur Joost Declerc et de la commissaire Charlotte Crevits, Sandra Hauser est artiste en résidence à la Wunderkammern Residence du Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens en Belgique du 14 au 28 mars 2019 à la suite des précédents résidents Rirkrit Tiravanija et Nástio Mosquito. Cette résidence marque la toute première étape de recherche de son projet réalisé avec Don Oréo, qui portera plus tard le titre « I Would Prefer Not To ».

À l’époque, Don Oréo et Hauser ne se connaissaient pas encore et elle a commencé à chercher le cheval idéal pour devenir son partenaire de collaboration dans ce voyage qui allait changer sa vie. Elle réalise les premiers dessins du costume, prend des cours d’équitation western, étudie la scène équestre régionale et, ce faisant, se transforme en cow-girl électrique.
À propos de la résidence :
Le Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens (MDD) est depuis peu complété par la Wunderkammer Residence, un projet de l’artiste Hans Op de Beeck, réalisé en collaboration avec l’architecte Mo Vandenberghe (studio MOTO). Op de Beeck a transformé l’ancienne Villa Meander, une villa construite au début des années 1930, en un « gesamtkunstwerk » unique. Le bâtiment est conçu comme une « wunderkammer » contemporaine et abrite la collection personnelle de la bibliothèque de Jan Hoet (1936-2014), tout en faisant également office de résidence pour des artistes, commissaires, chercheurs et écrivains ayant un profil (inter)national, non européen. Située entre le bâtiment du musée datant de 1968, la rivière historique de la Lys et l’ancienne résidence de Jules et Irma Dhondt-Dhaenens, les fondateurs du musée, la Wunderkammer vise à créer un espace de dialogue, de réflexion et de recherche dans le contexte rural typique du musée. By invitation of director Joost Declerc and curator Charlotte Crevits Sandra Hauser is artist in residence at The Wunderkammern Residence of the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Belgium from the 14 - 28 March 2019 following previous residents Rirkrit Tiravanija and Nástio Mosquito.
The residency marks the very first research step of her project together with Don Oréo later to be titled „I Would Prefer Not To“. Back then Don Oréo and Hauser didn’t know each other yet and she started to search for the right horse to be her collaboration partner on this life changing journey. She realizes the first drawings of the costume, takes Western riding lessons, researches the regional horse scene and by doing so transforms herself into an electric cowgirl.
About the Residency:
The museum Dhondt-Dhaenens (MDD) is since recently flanked by The Wunderkammer Residence, a project by artist Hans Op de Beeck, realized in collaboration with architect Mo Vandenberghe (studio MOTO). Op de Beeck transformed the former Villa Meander, a villa built at the beginning of the 1930s, into a unique 'gesamtkunstwerk.’ The building is conceived as a contemporary 'wunderkammer' and houses the personal library collection of Jan Hoet (1936 - 2014) while also doubling as a residence for artists, curators, researchers and writers with an (inter) national, non-European focus. Set between the museum building from 1968, the historic Lys River and the former residence of Jules and Irma Dhondt-Dhaenens, the founders of the museum, The Wunderkammer aims to create a space for dialogue, reflection and research within the typical rural context of the museum.
