Sandra Hauser, douée du talent de murmurer à l'oreille des chevaux et de monter à cheval depuis l'âge de trois ans, a décidé en 2019 d'utiliser son affinité personnelle avec ces animaux dans sa pratique artistique. Depuis lors, Hauser est plongée dans le développement d'un projet à long terme intitulé "I Would Prefer Not To."

Après avoir dressé pendant deux ans un cheval traumatisé et non dressé appelé Don Orèo dans le village de Fos-sur-Mer en France, l'artiste entreprendra avec lui un voyage à travers l'Europe dans sa quête de liberté intérieure, d'aventure et d'abstraction dans la vie quotidienne. Pendant la journée, Hauser poursuit sa pratique et le travail en cours avec le cheval, rencontre des gens, découvre des lieux ou assiste à des événements liés à sa recherche et à son désir de changement.
La soirée est réservée à une courte performance, non annoncée, où un simple passant peut assister au passage éclairé et onirique d'une femme avec un cheval.

Le titre "I Would Prefer Not To" trouve son origine dans la nouvelle Bartleby d'Herman Melville (1853), qui est devenue la devise officielle de la théorie critique du philosophe Slavoj Žižek. Dans le contexte de notre société post-fordiste régie par une rigidité générale et un état d'insécurité, l'effort poétique de Hauser peut être considéré comme un acte d'activisme silencieux. Les questions relatives à la liberté se posent de manière simple : Que suis-je autorisé à faire ? Qu'est-ce que mon homologue a le droit de faire ? Où puis-je trouver un espace public ? Le dialogue, la conscience et le classicisme s'opposeront à son retrait.

Cc Strombeek est heureux de présenter le coup d'envoi de ce voyage, qui sera suivi en 2022 par des étapes à Vienne et en Italie au jardin de sculptures "Il Giardino" de Daniel Spoerri, entre autres. Outre les apparitions inopinées de Sandra Hauser et Don Orèo dans l'espace public, l'espace d'exposition du Cc Strombeek sera activé par l'artiste du 11 au 19 Mai 2022.

Sandra Hauser, gifted with the talent of horse whispering and riding since the age of three, decided in 2019 to use her personal affinity with these animals in her artistic practice. Since then, Hauser has been immersed in the development of a long-term project “I Would Prefer Not To.”

After two years of training a traumatised and untrained horse called Don Orèo in the village of Fos-sur-Mer, France, the artist will undertake a journey with him through Europe in her search for inner freedom, adventure and abstraction in daily life. During the day, Hauser continues her practice and the ongoing workflow with the horse, meeting people, discovering locations or attending events linked to her inquiry and desire for change.

The night is reserved for a short, unannounced performance where a casual passerby could witness the dreamlike illuminated passage of a woman with a horse.
The title “I would prefer not to” finds its origin in Herman Melville’s 1853 short story Bartleby, which became the official motto in the critical theory of philosopher Slavoj Žižek. Seen against the backdrop of our post-Fordist society ruled by an overall rigidity and state of insecurity, Hauser’s poetical endeavour can be considered as a silent act of activism. Questions about freedom arise in a simple way: What am I allowed to do? What is my counterpart allowed to do? Where do I find public space? Dialogue, consciousness and classicism will oppose its withdrawal.

Cc Strombeek is pleased to present the kick-off of this journey, which will be followed in 2022 by stops in Vienna and Italy at the sculpture garden “Il Giardino” of  Daniel Spoerri, among others. Alongside the unannounced appearances of Sandra Hauser and Don Orèo in the public space, the exhibition space of Cc Strombeek will be activated by the artist between May 11th up to the 19th 2022.
