Depuis 1940, le camp militaire Joffre, près de Rivesaltes, contient une histoire de l’enfermement des «Indésirables» sous des appellations différentes : centre d’hébergement, d’internement, de rassemblement, de séjour surveillé, de transit, de rétention administrative.
Cette histoire n’a jamais été celle d’un centre, mais d’une dispersion acharnée, organisée, de milliers d’individus coupables d’exister. Pour certains, la mort fut au rendez-vous.

From 1940, the Joffre military camp near Rivesaltes served as a detention centre for “The undesirable” under different appellations :
housing center, internment center, meeting center, supervised-stay center, transit center, and administrative retention center. Its history is that of organised and systematic isolation of people whose only crime was to exist. Some of these people died there.
Now the sound of their footsteps isn’t lost to history. |
