Beyond Narcissus

Exposition collective
Du 20/11/2005 au 30/01/2006 à New York

D O R S K Y G A L L ER Y|Curatorial Programs is pleased to announce the continuation of its program of independently-curated exhibitions. Beyond Narcissus curated by Soko Phay-Vakalis will open on Sunday, November 20th from 2:00-5:00 P.M. and remain on view through January 30, 2006. A color brochure with an essay by the curator has been published to accompany the exhibition.

An everyday object of ancient origin, the mirror has never ceased to fascinate artists who, even today, incorporate it in their work and question it intensively. How has the mirror shaped the transformations of contemporary art? What are the myriad functions of the mirror in a civilization that is dominated by image? The exhibition Beyond Narcissus attempts to explore “non-narcissistic” mirrors that break with mimetic illusion. Twelve French and American artists in the exhibition — Dennis Adams, Valérie Belin, Andrea Blum, Alfredo Jaar, Patrick Killoran, Sandra D. Lecoq, Ferran Martín, John L. Moore, Pascal Pinaud, Philippe Ramette, Philippe Segond, and Patrick Tosani — all have different esthetic approaches, from figurative to conceptual, and utilize various media, including painting, sculpture, photography, installation art, and video. Together, they demonstrate the increasingly ephemeral sense of reality that pervades modern society, and the depersonalization of the subject, using mirrors in ways that are empty, fragmented, deformed, or abyssal.

More information about Beyond Narcissus may be found at the website www.beyondnarcissus.org. The exhibition will travel to DHC/Art in Montreal, Canada in early 2007.

Beyond Narcissus was sponsored in part by the generous support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, CNAP-Paris, Groupe Jacques Bogart, Galerie Renos Xippas, Galerie Nathalie Obadia, and Air France.
