Regard sur le monde de l’art 2000-2009
Le monde de l’art est un monde étrange. Ses membres, artistes, collectionneurs, galeristes et marchands d’art, critiques et commissaires d’exposition se retrouvent plusieurs fois par an dans de différents lieux.
Pour organiser ces évenéments ephémères et en assurer le bon déroulement il en faut d’« employees » : des serveuses, traiteurs, régisseurs, gardiens, gens d’escorte.
Les premiers, les « professionnels », ont inventés une multitude de codes qui permettent aux initiés de se reconnaître. Le spectateur non averti confronté à cet univers est donc confus.
Ce chanteur tatoué de la tête aux pieds dans une boite parisienne est un artiste très en vogue, ce mec en salopette est un artiste des plus côtés. La fente taillée dans le buisson est une œuvre d’art de l’artiste allemande Rosemarie Trockel. Le pique-assiette est un critique d’art new-yorkais...
Le galeriste londonien a le regard inquiet d’un broker, qui surveille une baisse des actions. Les flics qui traversent la salle d’expo ne sont pas des artistes déguisés – mais il y en a sur une autre image.
Le monsieur qui balaye ne fait pas une performance, il nettoie. L’homme assis sous le pont écoute une pièce sonore. Cette dame aux allures de star : actrice ou spectatrice ?
Les gens dans le parc ne se promènent pas, ils vont d’une foire d’art à une autre. Les vendeuses de hot-dogs à la Biennale de Venise ont un air de princesse sur leurs balcon qui donne sur le Canale Grande .

The artworld is a strange place. Galerists, collectors, institutional deciders, curators, art critics and artists meet several times a year in different locations. It needs a lot of people to organize these events: The stuff composed of cleaners, service people like catering services and maintenance, security guards. The first group uses a whole bunch of codes in order to recognize each other. Some mean artists like to play around with these codes. The innocent spectator will be completely confused. Living with a curator I started observing this powerful microcosm in the early nineties, long before I decided to get involved myself. It was useful to have all of the necessary informations about who’s who but to stay kind of outside. I neither wanted to buy, nor to sell, nor to make myself a name or get influence. At that timeI had no other issue but to enjoy art. This privileged situation is probably the reason why I succeeded to take these ambiguous pictures. The «fake artist» at Frieze 2008 looks much more real then a lot of the visitors. The tatoo-covered singer in a nightclub turns out to be the trendy french artist Jean-Luc Verna performing during FIAC 2007. The rasta-styled guy is not looking through the hole in the bushes, he looks actally at it - a sculpture by Rosemarie Trockel. The hot-dog-ladies at the exit of Venise Arsenale look like venitian princesses on their balcony on Canale Grande. They see the art world pass by all day. Some of the galerists look like brokers in a bank and behave as serious.
The presence of uniforms in the artworld is somewhat striking : Some artists use uniforms as a tool to perform, but the escort men and security guys don’t play around at all. What may they see?
The artwork on the wall is called «fluids». Two hands seem to grab into the caddy. But this object is not part of the art work. It belongs to the catering service, The two hands in the advert in front of it double the ones on the wall. Fluids and liquids. That’s the difference.
