Lors d’échanges de paroles entre étrangers, les phrases sont traduites par leur auteur pour être comprises par ses interlocuteurs. Ici, c’est donc la table qui, munie de gouttières dessinant le drapeau anglais, les collecte et les redistribue après leur avoir donné cette forme anglaise par le biais de ce double réseau (central et des diagonales). Réseau qui, en déterminant de fait territoires et frontières contribue aussi à organiser une topographie des rapports humains, de l’intime au collectif.
I made Union Table pour convives internationaux after a residency in Holland that involved artists from several countries. There were seven of us on the residency and whilst none of us were English, it was the language we spoke as a group.
Together, we experienced the process of ‘exporting’ the discussion - via translation - to be able to share it, using an intermediary language that everybody could have access to and use. There, as it is commonly, the table was the place where most conversations took place, during meals as well as at meetings.
Union table came out of the memory of this experience. Its top is equipped with guttering that forms a Union Jack motif. A network of canals collects and redistributes the words, giving them their ‘british shape’.
The drainage system acts both as a link connecting the guests around the table - transmitting the flux of words - and as a frontier which defines triangular sections, one for each participant in the conversation.
