The loop
The loop materializes in space the sequence of analogies of the type: “A is to B what C is to D” (A/B=C/D). A sequence of analogies takes the following form: A/B=C/D=E/F=... Y/Z. I wanted this sequence of analogies to be looped. X/Y=A/B: we can see, hereby, that at the moment when the sequence is wound up, it starts all over again at its point of departure. The analogy loop is given sequence by objects, shapes and figures. All these components are coloured and put on their infrastructure the way musical notes are put on a score. It is not crucial to be acquainted with the underlying intellectual construction to understand the way it functions visually, rhythmically and harmonically. This piece takes the form of a horizontal 8. It refers to the mathematical sign for infinity. The ubiquity of the analogy in knowledge and in the arts raises the issue of knowing whether, for human beings, reality is or isn’t presented like an infinite sequence of analogies, with neither beginning nor end. The loop is part of an exploratory work dealing with the artistic gesture, using methods that are a priori alien to it--here mathematics and the cognitive sciences. As always, this approach verges on the boundaries of non-sense and wit. The universality of the figure of the analogy has made it suspect in the eyes of philosophers and logicians. My loop of analogies is a kind of extravagant rehabilitation. I had already broached the issue of the analogy in Analogy, a video installation shown at the Venice Biennale (On Board, 1995) and at the Languedoc-Roussillon Regional Contemporary Art Collection centre [Frac] (Aperto, 1995). It is part of the Frac Languedoc-Roussillon collection. The Loop/La Boucle was constructed and shown at the Frac Champagne-Ardenne (Rheims, 1996), and is also part of that collection. The trust shown by Nathalie Ergino in an art project that seemed to be unrealizable was decisive.
