D&G - A series of presentations, discoveries and exchanges organized by Artexte Information Centre (Montreal), Documents d’artistes (Marseilles) and the Frac (Marseilles),  with works on loan from Artexte and the Centre de documentation Ernst Goldschmidt, [mac] musée d’art contemporain de Marseille.

D&G provides an occasion for the public to explore publishing practices in the contemporary art world. This event presents a selection of publications characterized by their use of parody and imitation. These hybrid publications hover between documentation and artistic intervention, they are the creative extension of artistic practices that employ strategies of appropriation or détournement that reference document forms outside the world of art. They parody and blur the lines between accepted forms of documentation, the exhibition catalogue and the artist monograph. The selection of publications is mainly drawn from two collections in France and Québec, Canada and will be available for consultation throughout the exhibition.

D&G also offers the opportunity to bring together participants and professionals in the world of art, publishing and documentation in order to discuss the significance of these works. What is their documentary function? How do they make us reconsider the roles of author, publisher and reader? How can we reconcile these documents that inherently defy definition? To address these and other questions, two days of presentations will be offered by the Frac, bringing together a diverse group of participants (professors, publishers, artists, curators, and librarians) who are involved in the documentation and dissemination of contemporary artistic practices.

Books play a central role in the art world through the transmission of images, thoughts and strategies. It can be both a container for knowledge and a support for artistic intervention. D&G reaffirms the notion that publications act as a platform for the circulation and exchange of ideas, and as a conduit between the artists intention and the public, as well as between creative forms and their dissemination.
